34 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 7, 2006 Safe & Fun Hockey Buzz, still unbeaten, clinches playoff spot With more than a third of its regularseason schedule to play, the Oakville Buzz has already locked up a playoff spot. SPORTSBRIEFS Oakville improved to 12-0 on the Ontario Lacrosse Association Junior B campaign with weekend wins over the Clarington Green Gaels and Markham Ironheads, padding its lead in the South East Division to six points over the Mimico Mountaineers. The Buzz also has two games in hand. Friday, the Buzz downed the Green Gaels 11-9 at Maplegrove Arena, Oakville's slimmest margin of victory this year. Brenden Thenhaus scored five times for the Buzz, which scored six times in the second period after managing only one marker in the first. Josh Smyth had a goal and four assists, Brian Rea had two goals and two helpers, and Sean Thomson scored and set up three goals. Also tallying for the Buzz were Mike Bentivegna and Reed Board. Sunday in Markham, Thenhaus continued to fill the net as his four goals helped Oakville to a 10-7 win. Smyth had two goals and two assists, Board had three helpers and Bobby Debrone and Alex Crepinsek each earned a pair of assists. Scoring singles for the Buzz were Drew Petkoff, Chris Moulson, Justin Wilson-Kirby and Brian Rea. Oakville's quest for perfection con- tinues tomorrow as the team travels to Halton Hills for a clash with the division-rival Bulldogs (8-5). Halton Hills returns the visit Friday at Maplegrove, an 8 p.m. start, and the Buzz will host the Cornwall Celtics Sunday at 2 p.m. Blue Devils win home opener It didn't take the Oakville Blue Devils long to avenge their season-opening loss to the Brampton Stallions. Oakville dominated the Stallions 4-1 Sunday at Bronte Athletic Field, the Blue Devils' first home game since winning the Canadian Professional Soccer League championship last year. Brampton edged the Blue Devils 2-1 the previous weekend in the opening game for both teams. Miles O'Connor, Zoran Kalic, Judah Hernandez and Sam Hassam scored Sunday for Oakville, which led 1-0 at halftime. Brampton's Gladstone Richards spoiled the shutout by scoring with 10 minutes remaining in regulation time. The Blue Devils return to action this weekend with a pair of games in Quebec against the Laval Dynamites. Oakville's next home game isn't scheduled until June 18, again versus Laval. PROMOTING RESPECT: Six-year-old local resident Madeline Clapham was one of 100 young female hockey players selected to join Olympic gold medalists and women's national hockey team members Vicky Sunohara (left) and Cassie Campbell at last weekend's Chevrolet Safe & Fun Hockey Festival in Brampton. Safe & Fun Hockey, also endorsed by former NHL stars Mike Bossy and Bobby Orr, is designed to uphold the values of respect and responsibility in minor hockey. Golf for girls' hockey The Oakville Hornets' annual golf and dinner fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, June 24 at Deerfield Golf Club. All proceeds from the tournament will go to support the Oakville Hornets Girls Hockey Association, which will use the money to buy ice time, uniforms and other necessities. Tee times will begin at 11 a.m., with a buffet dinner served at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $90 per player, with carts available at additional cost. Those wishing to sponsor a hole can do so with a donation of $200 (a sign with the company's logo will be placed at the tee box). Organizers are also accepting donations for the prize table. The Oakville Hornets are a notfor-profit, volunteer-led organization. Its goals are to promote and develop youth hockey for girls and to provide its members the opportunity to play competitive hockey and take part in hockey-related activities throughout the year. The Hornets are part of the Ontario Women's Hockey Association and representative teams compete in the North Metro Girls' Hockey League.
