The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 14, 2006 - 3 Super Pet re-opens Special Olympics Torch Run Thursday Make a point this Thursday of cheering on the participants of the 2006 Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Ontario Special Olympics. On Thursday at 9:15 a.m., Halton Regional Police Chief Gary Crowell will be joined at the start of the Torch Run by Director of Education for the Halton Catholic School Board Lou Piovesan, Director of Education for the Halton Public School Board Wayne Joudrie and Olympic Gold Medalist in women's hockey from the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Beckie Kellar. The starting point for the Halton leg of this year's Torch Run is in Burlington at Plains Road and Howard in the Zeller's Plaza (near the Canadian Tire kiosk). The Torch Run will continue through Burlington and Oakville, ending at St. Thomas Aquinas High School at Lakeshore Road and Dorval Drive around 2:15 p.m. Special Olympics is a year round international sports training and athletic competition program for children and adults with special needs. The program provides opportunities to develop fitness, and participate in the excitement of sports events. The Halton Regional Police Service sponsors the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which raises money and builds awareness for the Special Olympic program. "The Halton Regional Police Service is a proud supporter of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics, and we are constantly impressed by the effort made by the athletes in their training and commitment to reaching their fitness and athletic goals," said Crowell. Once again this year, Halton schools are playing a big part in raising funds for the Torch Run. As the Torch Run winds its way through the communities, students will be out on the sidelines cheering on the runners, and encouraging the special needs students from their own schools who will be participating in the run.
