"The Universal Youth Foundation is a Canadian national registered charity that is committed to providing education assistance to children and youth in need throughout the world by funding schools and teachers," Mario Cortellucci, the Chair and Founder of Universal Youth Foundation, said of the charity at a recent press conference regarding the event. The Canadian side could feature as many as three players from Oakville -- Kara Lang, Diana Matheson and Amanda Cicchini. "We're proud of our country, we're proud of our national teams and we're proud of every product soccer can create, from grassroots house league to what we're here to promote, our wonderful women's national team," said Robert Iarusci, former captain of the Canadian men's team. In 2005, the charity's first year, the Universal Youth Foundation raised more than $265,000. With the money it has raised, the Universal Youth Foundation has initiated the permanent establishment of an education facility in Tanzania (Africa) and a temporary emergency school accommodation in Pakistan for kids displaced by the tsunami. Several Oakville players used the opportunity to pad their stats, including Thenhaus (three goals, eight assists), Josh Smyth (two goals, six assists) and the defensive-minded Matt Bertrand (first goal of the season). Though the Buzz reached the three-quarter pole of the season with an unbeaten record, the club can hardly afford to rest on its laurels. Entering last night's contest in Scarborough, Oakville was only two points ahead of the 141 Barrie Tornado for top spot in the Ontario Lacrosse Association's East Conference. The Buzz will be tested down the stretch as well. Oakville will host the 11-5 Mimico Mountaineers Friday, then visit Halton Hills (9-7) and Mimico before concluding the season in Barrie. Little fully expects first in the East, and home-floor advantage throughout the playoffs, to be determined that final game against the Tornado. "We're hoping it's the ultimate showdown," he said. "I'd do a little happy jig (if Barrie loses another game before then) but I don't think they're going to. If it comes down to that, we'll be ready to face the challenge." BUZZ BRIEFS: Friday's game against Mimico, an 8 p.m. start, will be the Buzz's final home game of the season. The team is holding a Fan Appreciation Night and invites all youngsters to wear their minor lacrosse uniform to the contest. Buzz players will be available following the game to sign autographs... Thenhaus collected 16 points (seven goals, nine assists) in Oakville's past three games, with Smyth adding 15 (four goals, 11 helpers). Brian Rea scored five times, while Chris Moulson, Justin Wilson-Kirby, Dan Macrae, Jon Hagel, Kyle Hagel, Bryan Johnson, Nik Matwijszyn, Thomson, Perras and Board all tallied at least once...
