The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 28, 2006 - 3 Eyewitness followed alleged robber to Bronte Park Continued from page 1 started around 11:40 a.m. when a lone male entered the Scotiabank at 525 Iroquois Shore Rd., approached a teller and produced a note demanding money. The teller complied with the man's request and handed over an undisclosed amount of cash. No weapon was brandished by the suspect or observed during the robbery and there were no injuries sustained by staff or customers. According to Sgt. Payne, a bank customer, who was approaching the front door from the parking lot, saw a man leave, followed by the manager who said they'd just been robbed. This customer "put two and two together," said Sgt. Payne, deduced that the man leaving the bank was the thief and observed him leaving the property in a copper-coloured Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. The witness called 911 and followed the suspect in his own vehicle, remaining in constant contact with dispatch personnel as he stayed behind the Hyundai along the QEW, then north on Burloak Drive. He then watched as the vehicle pulled into Bronte Creek Provincial Park. In retrospect, said Sgt. Payne, the suspect likely drove immediately back out of the park as the witness continued north on Burloak and hung a U-turn at Upper Middle Road before returning south. Not wanting to take any chances at the time, said Sgt. Payne, between 20-30 Halton and OPP officers descended on the park while an additional 10-15 uniforms established a perimeter so that no one could leave the grounds. The Halton Regional Tactical Rescue Unit and Canine officers responded to the scene as well and, with the assistance of the OPP Air Support Unit, the park was searched for the suspect and vehicle. This extensive effort proved fruitless, however, and the suspect was not located. Vehicular and pedestrian traffic were closed on Burloak Drive between Upper Middle Road and the QEW. At the same time, five buses of students (one filled with high school youths, four with elementary pupils) were sent from the park, which was closed from noon until 4:15 p.m.. About 200 visitors in SUSPECT: Halton Regional police have released this security camera image of the suspect they believe was responsible for robbing Oakville Scotiabank branches on June 21 and June 26. This image is from the June 21 robbery at the Trafalgar Road branch. BARRIE ERSKINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER LOOKING FOR CLUES: Halton Regional Police Service Sgt. Rhonda Alcock, of the Forensic Investigation Unit, lifts a print from the front door of the ScotiaBank at Iroquois Shore Road after the bank was robbed Monday. RON KUZYK / OAKVILLE BEAVER EVACUATION: About five busloads of students on school outings were escorted from Bronte Creek Provincial Park Monday afternoon as a precaution during a search for a bank robbery suspect. total were evacuated. Sgt. Payne explained that the search operation was confined to the park boundaries and at no time was the community at risk from the suspect involved. As for the witness who followed the robber, Sgt. Payne said he got involved but as police advise all citizens did not involve himself with the criminal in question. "He did everything he should and did so in a safe manner and for that we are very appreciative," said Sgt. Payne. The suspect is described as a white male, 5-foot-7 with a medium build, 50-60 years of age. He has salt-and-pepper hair, was clean shaven and wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and a dark-coloured Tshirt with white writing on the front. Halton Regional Police detectives believe the suspect was also responsible for the robbery of the Scotiabank at 2391 Trafalgar Rd. on June 21.
