Johansson, Stittle 14th at European regatta Oakville Yacht Squadron alumnus Oskar Johansson and partner Kevin Stittle placed 14th at the 2006 Tornado European Championships, held recently in Germany. The pair sailed a relatively conservative series over the six-day schedule, posting scores averaging 15 out of the 72-boat fleet. "Overall, we sailed a good event," said Stittle, an Orangeville resident. "There is always room for improvement, but if we can tighten up our racing we can make a good gain in the standings." The event had significant importance because the pair used it as a test run for its Olympic qualifiers, to be held next summer. In order to qualify for a spot at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Beijing, Johansson and Stittle must finish within the top 11 countries -- a goal they accomplished at the European championships, although two strong teams did not compete. The team will continue training in Portugal, the venue for the 2007 world championships, before heading off to Argentina this fall to prepare for the 2006 worlds. Johansson and Stittle are currently ranked 10th in the ISAF, an international sailing federation ranking system. New recreational league for hockey oldtimers A new opportunity for recreational hockey players age 50 and older is coming to Oakville this fall with the inaugural season of the Oakville Classics Oldtimers Hockey League. Prime time ice on Sunday mornings allows for a six-team league, to be filled with either team or individual entries.
