The strategy paid off immediately as the Northmen were called for three straight shot-clock violations to open the final frame, stemming their momentum. Offensively, the Buzz had little problem generating chances against the OLA's stingiest junior B team. "We've been preparing for a lot of situations," said Drew Petkoff, who led Oakville with a three-goal, threeassist effort. "We had to try something different, a few more pick and rolls, stronger pick and rolls, really working on getting the man open. I think we executed that well." Wilson-Kirby had two goals for the Buzz, as did Smyth. Dan Macrae and Brian Rea added singles, while Brenden Thenhaus had four assists. Gary Muzzin earned the win in goal. Matt McNutt replied for the Northmen with a hat trick, with Jayson Card and John Quarrie also tallying for Orangeville. Orangeville mistakes "We just made a lot of mistakes in the third period and Oakville's too good a team to make mistakes against," Orangeville coach Mike Falkiner said. "They worked harder than we did, and basically that's what it comes down to in these types of series." After Sunday's contest, scheduled for a 7 p.m. start, the series will return to Oakville Tuesday for Game 3. Having made 5,986 trips to the winner's circle in his career, the Ottawa native is quickly closing in on his 6,000th win in the sulky, something he doesn't take for granted. "I am very appreciative and honoured that I've been able to obtain the success that I have in this industry," said Zeron, 49, who in his career has driven the winners of more than $63million in purse earnings. "It wasn't the sort of thing I really thought about much when I was starting out, but as you get older you start to envision certain milestones you hope to achieve. It's a pretty good feeling." Even though reaching the 6,000win plateau is an illustrious achievement, the 'Z-Man,' an all around horseman who also trains a stable of horses, isn't resting on his laurels. If anything, he is as motivated for success as he ever has been. "When I started to find more and more success over the years, I sort of started to aim for 7,000 or 7,500 career wins. And, believe me, I'm not even close to finished yet," said Zeron, who currently ranks second in the Woodbine/Mohawk drivers' colony this season in terms of wins (186) and purses ($3,841,132). "I feel great now and I don't think anything will be changing in the near future." The man who sports the blue and white silks (with a touch of red) is coming off his most productive year on Woodbine/Mohawk circuit since he relocated from Montreal, Quebec, in 1995. Last year's campaign at WEG saw Zeron pilot 1,684 starters and notch 262 wins, 199 second-place efforts and 185 third-place finishes, as he drove the winners of over $5.5-million in purses, all under the keen eye of his son, Scott. "Scott's planning on getting his driver's license next year and is hoping to start driving some horses at Georgian [Downs] and Grand River [Raceway]," said Zeron, in reference to his protégé, one of his four children. "He'll put in his time, still get his education, and learn the ropes the same way I did." Zeron hopes to eventually focus primarily on the training side of the business and pilot the occasional trotter, although, at the pace he is going, there doesn't seem to be any reason to slow down.
