www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 23, 2006 - 33 Kayaker to reconsider training regimen 10-and-under Angels earn provincial silver Continued from page 31 little surprised," the 24-year-old said. "It was frustrating but I... put my best effort forth. With Lane 9 being sheltered, those guys got a bit of a break." Van Koeverden said his fourth-place finish in the 1,000m affected his 500m race the following day, admitting he didn't handle the disappointment as well as he could have. "I wasn't as prepared to race as I would have been if I had won a medal in the 1,000," he said. "I was disappointed and that definitely played a factor." Still, van Koeverden -- who won 500m gold and 1,000m bronze at the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Greece -- said he's not worried about his subpar outing. He is yet to win gold at a world championships, placing second in 1,000m and third in 500m at last year's worlds in Croatia. "Honestly, I wouldn't have been terribly satisfied with a second or third. I could have been more conservative and just raced for a medal, sat back and finished in the top three, but my goal was to win," he said. "Sometimes when you're as ambitious as that, you fall short. Fourth not to be coveted "I guess it's more a case of not paddling really well towards the end of the summer," he continued. "I just feel I was a lot stronger earlier in the year. We did experiment with (training) this year and obviously we'll go back to the drawing board and reconsider, because fourth is not something to be coveted." Van Koeverden will join his Burloak teammates this week for the national club championships, then compete in one more World Cup event before concluding his competitive season with a long-distance race in San Francisco. He intends to conclude his kinesiology program at McMaster University this fall before taking a year off to prepare for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Meanwhile, fellow Burloak member Mark Oldershaw of Burlington finished sixth in the canoe singles 500m. Oldershaw won his heat and then finished third in the semifinal. The 23-year-old Carleton University student is coming off an injury to his left hand that limited his ability to compete the last two years. -- Jon Kuiperij can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com. A strong season for the Oakville Angels 10-and-under girls' fastpitch team concluded last weekend with a silvermedal showing at the provincial championships, held at Trafalgar Park. Oakville and Brampton needed an international tiebreaker inning (which begins with a runner on second base) to decide the championship game, with Brampton claiming an 8-7 decision. This past season, the Angels won tournaments in Waterloo, Mississauga and Brampton, then won the regional title in Brampton earlier this month. Oakville also went 14-2 in league play, finishing first. Players on the team include Shelby Strecker, Nicole Porter, Taylor Kangas, Alexandra Chesterfield, Tristan Vella, Sydney McIntosh, Alysia DaSilva, Veronique Chesterfield, Hailey MacArthur, Lyndsey Allingham, Hailey Strecker, Abigail Papineau and Madison Housel.
