Residents have been able to register their candidacy for local public office since January -- and some took advantage early in the year. While nominations opened in January, they don't close until 5 p.m. on Sept. 29 and nominations must be certified valid by the Town Clerk who acts as the Returning Officer by Oct. 2 -- the last day for a candidate to withdraw their nomination form. That's when the election race will really begin. However, many are out of the starter's box early seeking public office in Oakville's six wards -- each represented by two councillors -- a Town councillor and a Town/Halton Region councillor. Just this week, Ward 6 Councillor Janice Wright spiced up the mayor's race that had been brewing between 2003 adversaries, veteran Mayor Ann Mulvale and challenger Rob Burton who came to within 28 votes of unseating the mayor last time around. Late Tuesday, Wright announced her candidacy for the mayor's job. In southwest Oakville's Ward 1, veteran Town Councillor Ralph Robinson registered his intention to seek re-election on Jan. 2. Earlier this month, his counterpart, Town/Regional Councillor Mike Lansdown announced he wouldn't run. Hixon Street resident Alan Johnston announced in late January that he'd be seeking Lansdown's job. Shortly after Lansdown said he wouldn't run again, Michael Glynne, of Lakeshore Road West signed up, followed by Water's Edge Drive resident Margaret Mercer. In Ward 2 incumbent Cathy Duddeck will seek reelection for the Town councillor's position while veteran Town/regional Councillor Fred Oliver, Oakville's former police chief, will be challenged by Glenn Woolfrey, of Chatsworth Avenue. Ward 3 Town Councillor Chris Stoate has not yet announced his intentions, but if he seeks re-election he faces a challenge by Wayne Moorehead of Greeniaus Road. So far there's no news out of Ward 3 regarding the Town/regional council seat held by long-time councillor Keith Bird. In Ward 4, neither incumbent, Town Councillor Renee Sandelowsky or Town/regional Councillor Allan Elgar have yet to say if they'll seek re-election. However, Jeff Gareau, of Bonnybank Court, sand Jorge Urena, of Sequoia Way, want the Town councillor's job. In Ward 5, Town Councillor Marc Grant, who is seeking his second win, will be challenged by Mahmood Khan. Ward 5 Town/Regional Councillor Jeff Knoll will also be challenged by newcomer Angus Scott, who first registered to run as Halton Region's new chair as Joyce Savoline steps aside, but then decided to seek a council seat. In Ward 6, Town Councillor Tom Adams has yet to announce his intentions, but if he runs, he has lots of competition -- John Hussein, of Golden Briar Trail, Maria Robinson, of Holton Heights and Milorad Mitrovic, of White Oaks Boulevard, have all registered.
