Dr. Bob Issenman, paediatric gastroenterologist, McMaster Children's Hospital, Hamilton, will provide information on current and future treatment options for young individuals with inflammatory bowel disease. His presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is used to describe two similar, yet distinct, conditions: Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. This painful, chronic disease affects the digestive system causing the intestines to become inflamed. Symptoms include abdominal pain, cramping, fatigue, diarrhea and weight loss. IBD symptoms can vary in severity. Some people have mild symptoms that are easily treated with drugs and nutritional therapy, while others have debilitating symptoms that require potent drugs, frequent hospitalization and/or surgery. IBD is most commonly diagnosed between the ages of 15 to 25 and 45 to 55. An estimated 150,000 Canadians have IBD. This free seminar is at the Oakville Trafalgar Hospital, 327 Reynolds St., starting with displays and refreshments from 6:30 p.m. and the seminar commencing at 7 p.m. To reserve a seat contact 905-338-4379 or visit elittle@haltonhealthcare.on.ca.
