On-site registration begins at 11 a.m., and the event will continue to 4 p.m. Cycle for Autism will be held near Parking Lot D. Look for signs upon arriving at the park's day-use area off Burloak Drive north of the QEW. Walkers, runners and cyclists can choose between a five- and 10-kilometre route, and rollerbladers can circle a two-kilometre paved trail to reach their desired goal. It starts very early in childhood and is a severely disabling disorder that creates problems processing messages sent to the brain. As a result, it is difficult for the children to communicate and interact within their environments. Approximately one-third of children with autism never learn to talk. Its causes are unknown and there is no known cure. The rate of autism has increased dramatically from one in every 10,000 births five years ago to one in every 165 children currently, according to the Halton Chapter of Autism Ontario. Autism affects boys four times more often than girls. Autism Spectrum Disorder is now more prevalent than Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, cystic fibrosis and childhood cancer. Early intervention can help With early intensive intervention, individuals with autism have a better chance of achieving their maximum potential. Thanks to increased awareness and an overall understanding of this disorder, the myths that have kept people with autism locked behind closed doors, preventing them from leading any kind of normal life, are finally being stripped away. Last year's Cycle for Autism raised approximately $64,000. Proceeds from the event are used to operate a resource and programming centre for children and families affected by autism, run workshops and conferences, provide early intervention support for children, offer youth and adult groups, provide social, recreational and skill building programs, and hold March Break and summer camps.
