www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 8, 2006 - 25 Oakville Galleries exhibit explores urban territories Urban Territories / Territoires urbains opens today at Centennial Square and in Gairloch Gardens. The show tackles urban space, which is constantly changing, presenting new qualities and generating new realities that make it appear never-ending in our eyes. Visual art also undergoes these transformations, and many realities in urban life preoccupy many artists of our time. Throughout the 20th century, urban space was a major subject for photographers. Ever since it first appeared, photography has maintained a close connection to the city. Observed from widely divergent angles in the past, today the urban environment continues to elicit fresh perspectives and gives rise to new issues. Curated by Réal Lussier, the show features the work of Christian Barré, Martin Désilets, Isabelle Hayeur, Emmanuelle Léonard, Pavel Pavlov and Myriam Yates. Urban Territories / Territoires urbains addresses not only the question of the way physical space is organized, but also the various areas of interest and intentions of each artist. Using photographic and video images in a personal way, the six artists brought together for the show express in their work a particular point of view in urban reality. Whether it's physical territory or social space, each artist demonstrates a concern for this constantly changing environment and the new situations that come out of it. Urban Territories / Territoires urbains is a traveling exhibition circulated by the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal. The show runs at Centennial Square, 120 Navy St., and in Gairloch Gardens, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E, until Nov. 5. The opening is today from 7:30 8:30 p.m. at Centennial Square, followed by a reception in Gairloch Gardens from 8:30 10 p.m. Artists will be in attendance. Meet the Oakville Symphony Orchestra Sept. 17 Following its successful series of children's workshops last season, entitled Meet the Strings, Meet the Brass, Meet the Winds and Meet the Percussion, the Oakville Symphony will continue its community outreach by drawing them all together with a season-opening special concert: Meet the Orchestra. The concert will be presented by the full orchestra on September 17 at 3 p.m. at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. Meet the Orchestra is one, 50-minute performance, and is designed to appeal to young people. It's a chance to expose children to an orchestral concert experience. The concert will feature the various sections of the orchestra in turn, playing music that will be recognized by most of the audience, by melody if not by name, and accompanying explanations will be provided by the conductor Maestro Roberto DeClara. An added feature will be a draw to select five children from the audience, four of whom will each sit beside one of the orchestra's professional Section Leaders, and the fifth will "assist" the conductor during the playing of one of the pieces on the program. For tickets to Meet the Orchestra, $5 for students and children and $10 for adults and seniors, phone the Oakville Centre box office at 905-815-2021.
