www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 8, 2006 - 37 Van Koeverden secures overall kayaking title A pair of decisive wins at the final World Cup event of the season clinched the circuit's men's kayaking crown for local paddler Adam van Koeverden. The 24-year-old won both the 500-metre and 1,000m races by a full second at last weekend's meet in Guanhzou, China, bouncing back from a sub-par showing at last month's world championships in Hungary. "It was nice to rebound from a disapAdam van Koeverden pointing world championships," said van Koeverden, who won medals in both distances at the 2004 Olympic Summer Games but finished fourth in both races at the worlds. "It was also exciting to win a couple of medals with the K-4 (kayaking fours) guys." Van Koeverden teamed with Andrew Willows of Gananoque, Ont., Ryan Cuthbert of Carleton Place, Ont., and Steve Jorens of Richmond Hill, Ont., to help Canada win three more medals. The team won silver in 200m competition while earning bronze in the 500m and 1,000m events. Oldershaw third in canoe Van Koeverden's Burloak Canoe Club teammate, Mark Oldershaw, finished third in both his canoe races to earn third spot in the World Cup men's canoe final standings. Canada won a total of 10 medals at last weekend's World Cup meet. "It was a great season and we are extremely pleased with the performances of our athletes," said Graham Barton, high performance director for CanoeKayak Canada. "Following our world championships and World Cup performances, we look positioned for a podium run in at least six Olympic events." (Only in selected areas) Muay Thai boxing at Oakville Arena A taste of Thailand sporting culture will be on display this weekend in Oakville. Masters of the Ring, an authentic championship Muay Thai boxing event, will be contested tomorrow at Oakville Arena. Muay Thai, Thailand's national sport, features punches, elbow strikes, kicks, grappling and feints -- all executed to the tune of an accompanying windand-percussion ensemble. The main event will pit Paul Saccoccia against champion Chris Kew in a showdown for the Light Heavy Weight title. Elite fighters from Toronto, Kitchener, Stoney Creek, Scarborough, Stratford, Cambridge, Richmond Hill, Ottawa and Rosemare, Que., are also scheduled to compete. Muay Thai dates back several centuries and is believed to have been borne from the Thai people's needs to defend themselves and their land from aggressive powers. Thais developed a form of close, hand-to-hand combat best suited for the kind of rough-terrain battle they were fighting, and it became a rite of passage for Thai men to take up training in the martial art. One of the country's most celebrated warrior-heroes, King Naresuan the Great, is believed to have been an excellent boxer himself and made Muay Thai a required part of military training. Once considered a dangerous sport, using no safety gear and only lengths of cords to wrap around the fists of competitors, Muay Thai has since been adapted to follow international boxing regulations. In recent years, the sport has attracted a wide following outside of Thailand. Muay Thai is fought in five threeminute rounds with two-minute breaks in between. The fight is preceded by a wai khru dance, during which each contestant pays homage to his teachers -- a dance that is not only symbolic but also serves as a good warm-up exercise. Matches are decided by a knockout or by points. Three judges decide who carries the round and the one who wins the most rounds wins the fight. To one side of the ring is the band section, comprised of a Javanese clarinet, drums and cymbals, that accompanies the fight from the homage dance to the conclusion. The tempo goes up as the action inside the ring intensifies. Doors open Saturday at 6 p.m., with matches beginning an hour later. Oakville Arena is located at 133 Rebecca St., near Kerr St. One of the event's sponsors, Euro Vinyl Windows, has donated a VIP table to the Halton Big Brothers in order to share the sport with those who might not typically have the opportunity to see it. Tickets are available at the door or by calling 647-2061638. For more information, visit event organizer Lanna Muay Thai's website at www.lannamuaythai.ca. Eurotop Queensize Sleep Set $ Save 700!
