40 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 8, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com The Arctic adventure "Earlier this year, a group of 24 artists calling themselves the Arctic Quest, set sail to the Arctic to observe, paint and glory in its unforgettable beauty. All are very well known in Canada and together represent probably the most diverse set of painting skills to visit the high North at any one time. The journey took them from Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut, to three communities in Greenland, then back to Canada and through Lancaster Sound, the entrance to the North West Passage. The results will be on display at the Win Henstock Gallery starting Saturday in downtown Oakville. The exhibition showcases the many interpretations of a landscape and peoples that previously could only be imagined by the artists, and whose reality is today still unknown to the majority of Canadians. The impact on the artists of their surroundings can be clearly seen in the paintings, with their stark vivid, treeless vistas, huge multi shaped iceburgs and glaciers - and of course the 24 hour-a-day sunlight which hightened the effect of the ever present sun during the trip. Arctic Quest was conceived by Toronto artist Linda Mackey along with Kathy Haycock of Ottawa, and Bonnie Levinthal of Philadelphia with participants chosen from a long list of applicants. The trip was timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the first successful navigation of the Northwest Passage by Norwegian Raold Amundsen and to forge a link with the artists who accompanied early Arctic explorers and members of the Group of Seven and the handful of more recent painters who have worked in the North. As part of the trip, Haycock and her sister, Karole Pitman of Newfoundland are celebrating their father Maurice Haycock who painted in the Arctic with the Group of Seven member A.Y.Jackson. In addition to the work of the artists that made the journey to the North, paintings by A.Y.Jackson, Maurice Haycock, and Doris McCarthy will be exhibited, together with Inuit carvings. The Oakville show opens at 1pm Saturday Sept 9th when refreshments will be served and runs until Saturday Sept 23."
