10 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday October 4, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Marshall wants to trade chairs at region Continued from page 1 TO WIN! ENTER Oakville Beaver "I loved what I did but I was really concerned about the future of Halton, and believed that Joyce deciding to leave and with the individuals that had already filed for regional chair, they don't have the understanding and the knowledge and the kind of awareness of all the issues that are on the table and so critical to the future of Halton," said the volunteer firefighter. The other candidates insist their campaigns won't change as a result of Marshall joining late the race for chair. Burton said Marshall's entry into the race for chair would make him a magnet for questions about the region's spending and priorities. Brent Marshall "It's his budget - let him defend it," he said, noting Marshall's candidacy was a surprise. Plaschka said Marshall's decision to join creates more public intrigue in the regional chair's race. A question he could see emerging is Marshall's ability to lead versus administering. Carr said his electioneering will stay the course. "The reaction I received is better than I imagined," he said. This is his first crack at politics but Marshall brushed aside any suggestion he lacks political experience. "I'm not just what some people might call a staff person or bureaucrat because I've been at the senior level for so many years and have worked so closely with elected officials, not just with my peers at the management level," he said. -- Jason Misner can be reached at jmisner@burlingtonpost.com. $ 72 00 year Regional treasurer appointed interim CEO The region's top money manager is now Halton's top acting bureaucrat. Outgoing Chair Joyce Savoline appointed commissioner of Corporate Services and Treasurer Jane MacCaskill interim chief administrative officer this week. The replacement comes on the heels of Brent Marshall's retirement as the CAO last Friday. Savoline, who is not seeking re-election, said MacCaskill brings a depth of experience crucial to the role as CAO and has the respect of her peers, at the staff level and among politicians. The process to hire a permanent CAO will be the responsibility of the new regional council, Savoline said. Burlington regional councillors applauded MacCaskill's appointment. "I think she's highly organized," said Councillor Rick Craven. "I think we're in good hands." Said Councillor Carol D'Amelio: "(MacCaskill) answers the questions. She knows exactly what's going on in all areas of the region."
