www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday October 6, 2006 - 9 Catholic board okays temporary solution Faced with several health and safety issues at its Catholic Education Centre, the Halton Catholic District School Board gave the green light Tuesday night to installing a pair of leased Port-a-Pacs at the Drury Lane site in Burlington. The new Port-a-Pacs essentially glorified portable classrooms used for temporary office space are necessary to address imminent health and safety issues (such as mould and water leaks) in an existing Port-a-Pac at the Education Centre, as well as overcrowding there. Back in July, Superintendent of Facility Management Services Giacomo Corbacio told the Board that mould found on the exterior walls of the existing leaky Port-a-Pac has been "contained for the time being" but will soon become a health and safety issue for staff. This, Corbacio explained at the time, is necessary not only for the well-being of Board staff but also to avoid any potential fines and charges by the Ministry of Labour. As a result, trustees voted in July to reject expensive remediation work and have staff investigate replacing one existing Port-a-Pac with a leased one with a buy-out option, plus a second Port-a-Pac to relieve overcrowding for Special Education and Curriculum staff at Drury Lane. At Tuesday's Board meeting, trustees voted to direct staff to immediately initiate the construction and lease process to replace the existing Administration Port-a-Pac and place a second Port-a-Pac for Program Services Staff. The intent is to replace the Administration Port-a-Pac and installing the Program Services Port-a-Pac at the earliest possible date. The Board hopes construction will commence by midNovember and that all staff relocations will be completed by August 2007. The Request For Proposals for the supply and installation of the Port-aPacs was closed on Sept. 26 and staff is now reviewing and evaluating them. Trustees also approved a preliminary Port-a-Pac budget not to exceed an initial capital cost of $475,000 and a total monthly lease payment of $22,000 for the replacement Administration Port-a-Pac and the new Program Services Port-a-Pac. Finally, the Board approved using money from the Reserve for Working Funds for the initial capital costs and monthly lease payment for the Port-aPacs. Council approved the raise that will go into effect December 1, taking councillors' salaries from $36,535 to $39,168. A boost in the regional chairman's wages -- from $144,828 a year to $147,029 -- was also endorsed. The Citizen Advisory Committee on Council Remuneration, which consists of eight Halton residents, recommended the raises to bring council's earnings up to par with other municipalities. The group will reconvene in two years to decide if a full salary market review is required. Regional Chair Joyce Savoline commended the group once again for its efforts, noting, "It's a job we couldn't do effectively because of the awkwardness of it." The salary increases are expected to cost the Region an extra $54,861 annually. Cannot be combined with any other offer. Financing Available O.A.C. · Call For FREE In-Home Estimate H.V.A.C.
