The Oakville atom AAA Rangers fell just short of advancing to the playoff round at the Kawartha Early Bird Challenge hockey tournament in Peterborough recently, posting a 2-2 record in four games. The Rangers defeated the Hamilton Reps 7-0 and Richmond Hill Stars 5-1 while falling 2-0 to the Wexford Raiders and 6-4 to the Peterborough Petes. The tournament format awarded teams one point for winning a period and two points for winning a game, and the Rangers fell half-a-point short of moving to the playoff round. Alex Riche, Luke Nicol, Luke Hatfield, Alex Webster, Connor Holly, Antoine Brochu, Ryan Garvey and Foster Cuomo all scored at least one goal for Oakville during the tournament. Earning assists were Eric Luzar, Lucas Zitmanis, Mark Martone and Stefan Leblanc. Defensemen Marko Jugovic, Andrew Howarth and Connor Chambers played well throughout the tournament in front of goaltenders Matthew Gwillam and Josh Morton. Leah Franco netted nine points for Loyola in Wednesday's win, all coming on first-half three-pointers. Justine Bernier chipped in with five points. For Abbey Park, which fell to 1-1, Erin Tilley had a team-high nine points and added several blocks. Her sister, Megan Tilley, scored eight points before injuring her knee in the fourth quarter and being forced to the sidelines for the remainder of the game. "She has a history of knee problems. We're hoping for the best but expecting the worst... it didn't look good," said Eagles coach Mike Gratton. "It was really deflating for our girls. We have a pretty close-knit group and took it pretty bad." Gratton felt his team made a mistake by beginning the game in a zone defense, which the Hawks took advantage of with 17 first-quarter points. As the game wore on, the Eagles adjusted defensively and did a better job of shutting down Loyola's top shooters. "For their second game together, they did pretty well, considering Loyola is one of the better teams," Gratton said. -- Jon Kuiperij can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com. market basket Farm FRESH · Farm PRICES Candy Apples Wagon Rides NO ADMISSION CHARGE.
