www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday December 16, 2006 - 5 Some motorists still ignoring drinking and driving messages The Halton Regional Police want to remind everyone to "think before you take that drink." Recent regional traffic R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) spot checks combined with district enforcement initiatives indicate a slight regional increase in impaired driving investigations throughout Halton. Although no one has been arrested for impaired driving as a result of a R.I.D.E. spot check, 23 people have had their licence suspended because roadside screening revealed they had more than 50 milligrams of alcohol in their blood system, resulting in a `Warn' on the device. Since the R.I.D.E. program began on Dec. 1., three people have been arrested in Oakville, five in Milton, two in Georgetown and six in Burlington for impaired driving offences by uniformed officers involved in other enforcement initiatives. The Halton Police want to remind the driving public of the need to anticipate problems. The alcoholic drink that you consume now can take from a few minutes to an hour to affect your sobriety. Some might be lulled into believing they can consume more than they should before they get behind the wheel. The last drink that you consume may not begin to affect your judgement until after you begin your drive. It's too late at that point and that is when problems begin. Use a taxi, get a ride from a sober friend, or use designated drivers. Do whatever it takes. Your decision could save a life, yours, your loved one or some else's. "At this time of year we are reminded of the need to use good judgement when we are enjoying holiday cheer," said Chief Gary Crowell, who added, "We need to remember that need also exists throughout the year." The Halton Police support all initiatives directed towards reducing and eliminating impaired driving. Said Crowell, "Over the years, I have worked with several M.A.D.D. volunteers from across the Region. Many have joined because of a tragedy in their lives caused by a drunk driver. Some have joined because of a desire to make a difference. They have all worked with the intent of making our community safer. I want to thank them for their ongoing commitment and recognize them for their efforts. We will continue to support our local M.A.D.D. programs and welcome their participation in preventing further tragedies from occurring."
