"They're not crazy about the idea that I'm going, but they support my decision." Proud to be a Canadian, Drobotenko holds firm to his belief that Canada can make a difference in Afghanistan. "We're helping to stabilize a nation so that its peaceful enough that change can happen," he said. Always interested in the military, Drobotenko joined the Army Reserve in the summer of 2001 when he was 17 years old. He recalls how a couple of Canadian Forces Recruiters showed up at his school, T.A. Blakelock High School, driving a HLVW, a large truck used for transporting everything from troops to ammunition. As soon as he saw it, he wanted to drive it. "Me and a buddy, we cut class to talk to these recruiters for like an hour," he said. Since then, Drobotenko has become an expert driver for the Canadian Forces driving all sorts of vehicles, including the coveted HLVW, the vehicle-of-choice for combat support in Afghanistan for its versatility and size. "[They are] really fun off road," he said. "You have a giant truck and you can bash over a lot of terrain." But going off road is only one of the features that make this vehicle so appealing to their operators; the HLVW is also fitted with heavy armor. Ballistic glass serves as a windshield. On board Kevlar blast blankets can also stop shrapnel. A piece of plate steel mounted behind the windshield with a onefoot hole for visibility complete the package. After training and preparing for six months at a tempo much higher than the pace of operations in Afghanistan, Drobotenko feels he is as ready as he can be. "I feel confident in my training, confident in the guys I am going with, [and] the equipment we're using," he said. "I actually lucked out, I'm going over with one of my friends. Its that much easier going over with people you know." With a diploma in Police Foundations from Mohawk College, on his return, he is looking to continue his education and training in helping people in need by returning to school to become a paramedic.
