Shevchenko statue from a north Oakville park. The statue was cut off at the legs and stolen from the 15-foot-high Taras H. Shevchenko Memorial Park, located at 1363 Dundas St. W. in late December. Detectives in the Oakville Street Crime Unit continue to investigate the theft of the significant piece of Canadian Ukrainian history. The nearly 200-pound head of the statue was recovered from a Burlington scrap dealer early in the new year. The recovery of the statue's head occurred after the dealership owner, recognized what he had kept as a conversation piece and called police after the stolen statue was featured in a newspaper article. RON KUZYK / OAKVILLE BEAVER SHIPPING OUT: Oakville resident Dan Drobotenko, a T. A. Blakelock High School graduate, will soon be heading to Afghanistan for a six-month tour of duty as a driver of a heavily-armoured HLVW in the National Support Element (NSE). When he returns he would like to enroll in a paramedic training program. Canada is sending more troops to Afghanistan, and Oakville native Dan Drobotenko, 22, a Corporal in the Army Reserves, has volunteered to go with them. As Drobotenko enters the final phase of his six months of training before leaving for his six-month "It's not a tour of duty, he is summer at looking forward Boy Scout to taking part in camp, but I what he believes can't dwell is a vital mission. "I think our on things country is there that are doing something worrisome." important," he said in a recent Corporal interview. " It's a Dan Drobotenko very Canadian thing that we are going over to help." Drobotenko is part of the National Support Element (NSE), a unit made up to supply transportation personnel, base protection and convoy escorts, mechanics, medics, and clerks in charge of paperwork and administration. All of these troops come from smaller units stationed across the country. Drobotenko says part of getting ready to face the dangers waiting for him on the other side of the world is focusing on the positive while he is still in training. "It's not a summer at Boy Scout camp, but I can't dwell on things that are worrisome," he said. "At the moment, I'm not nervous, but I bet you on the flight over that might change."
