www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 2, 2007 - 13 Injured man pulled Bowlers still needed for Incredibowl event from burning car The quick actions of Halton police officers and Halton Emergency Medical Services are being credited for saving the life of an Oakville man from a flaming car. On Tuesday, at approximately 9:30 p.m. police and EMS responded to a head-on collision on Leighland Avenue near Robart's Road in Oakville. They arrived to find a Volkswagen Jetta had crashed into a flatbed truck trapping the Jetta's driver. To make matters worse, the crash had sparked a fire under the Jetta's hood. Thinking quickly two police and EMS staff grabbed tools from the crashed flatbed with which they were able to pry open the Jetta's door. They removed the 23-yearold man from the car just as the engine compartment became fully engulfed in flames. The man was rushed to Hamilton General Hospital where he was admitted with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The 44-year-old Oakville man driving the flatbed truck received only minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene. Police said the initial investigation indicates that the Jetta was travelling westbound on Leighland when it attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle ahead. It lost control and struck the eastbound flatbed. The crash closed Leighland Avenue for approximately three hours. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate the incident. Anyone with information related to it is asked to contact the Regional Traffic Bureau at 905-825-4777 or 905-6341831, ext. 2379 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS (8477).
