www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday February 2, 2007 - 23 DOWNTOWN THIS WEEK Discover the world and support international artisans from developing countries at Ten Thousand Villages, Downtown Oakville It takes a village...to support Oakville's Ten Thousand Villages `gift' of a gift shop. Ten Thousand Villages is a "notfor-profit" Fair Trade Organization designed to benefit international artisans. This beautiful shop houses eclectic merchandise bought directly from 120 artisan groups in over 30 developing countries. The selection of product is vast. Ingrid Heinrichs Pauls, store manager for 3 _ years, says, "Most retail is about profit...here it's about the producers." Having visited her first Ten Thousand Villages shop at 10 years old, the concept had such impact on Ingrid she eventually left a nursing career to become a volunteer. Today, she is dedicated to this distinctive shop and what it represents. Ingrid explains, "We are staffed mainly by 46 volunteers, most of whom are clients with a passion for the products and the cause. We offer customers a cup of fair trade coffee and present them with a summary as to what we're all about." The response of the Oakville community is overwhelmingly supportive. The merchandise is surprisingly affordable. It is the Fair trade concept and volunteers that allow reasonable pricing. Currently brimming at the seams with merchandise, February 1st begins an extraordinary sale. "We're celebrating a generous clearance sale featuring our Marketplace Clothing at a 25% discount, " says Ingrid. She beams while demonstrating the workmanship of the hand-embroidered Market coats, painstakingly embroidered by women of India. The beauty lies within the colours and stitching of the reversible batik fabric bearing the words `Dignity, Not Charity'. "This will be our last opportunity to feature these majestic jackets and coats." From jewellery to baskets to furniture or giftware...it's difficult to leave this store without a purchase.
