Warm Boots Warm Heart is working with Kerr Street Ministries, a local aid agency, to identify the children most in need of the program's help. She and her husband were driven to begin the Warm Boots Warm Heart program after being shocked by the amount of poverty in Oakville. "We were absolutely blown away when we found out there were over 10,000 people are living in Oakville under the poverty level. We researched and found there was no program really mentoring or reaching out to kids in this age group," she said. "There's people in need everywhere, but we said, `What's happening in our backyard.'" Some extensive fundraising later, McDermott's desire to help has become a reality. "I have a great support base of people. Some companies have given me some great deals," she said. At the program's November launch, ten of Oakville's less fortunate children were not only treated to winter gear, but a pizza party as well. The program's involvement in these children's lives will not end now that the winter clothing has been handed out. A winter carnival for them and their families took place last weekend at the Oakville Arena. Those present took part in XBOX challenges, jewellry making, the antics of a mad scientist and an extra special guest from the Raptors. "The kids don't know about it, but the Toronto Raptor is going to show up," said McDermott. McDermott takes comfort in the fact that as the children grow and leave the Warm Boots Warm Heart program other support programs, through Kerr Street Ministries, will take over. "We're going to be able to see them grow up with other support bases and other sources of encouragement until they get out of their teenage years." For all this hard work McDermott feels she has been deeply rewarded. "When you see a smile on a kid's face. When a kid says to you, `thank you so much for making me cool,' or `I can't believe that you like me.' When you hear that kind of stuff you know how great this program is."
