Four years ago Old Abbey Park drew public attention for the destructive partying and vandalism taking place there. Today it is a place of games, sports and recreation. In short, it has become a park again. While many factors could be used to explain the park's remarkable transformation, one that certainly cannot be discounted is Case Feenstra. While many local residents focused on increased policing as the solution to the park's rowdiness Feenstra saw the problem another way. "If we don't use the park someone else will use the park," he said. Feenstra decided a skating rink would be the best way to get the public out to the park in the winter. His first attempt at building such a rink met with limited success. "I built a small 20 by 40-foot little ice rink on a hill," said Feenstra. "We had two feet of water on one side and zero on the other side." Feenstra's project has come a long way since then. "I would say we have the largest outdoor ice rink," he said. "We have two side by side. They're about 160-feet long by about 65-feet wide." The Old Abbey Park ice rink is so large it has been divided up for all kinds of skating activities. "The large one is used for hockey playing for the young and old, the other little quarter is used for free skating. "I noticed a few nights ago there were a lot of figure skaters out there." Between 8 a.m. when the rink opens and 9 p.m. when it closes Feenstra says the rink sees about 200 people each day. As Feenstra explains not only the young are getting use out of it. "One of my neighbours, he's retired and he goes there at noon time for a bit to have a skate. He's in his seventies I think, but he likes it." Building and maintaining such a rink is not easy or cheap with Feenstra paying some of the costs out of his own pocket. "I bought the wood and the generator and the lights for it," he said. Fortunately Feenstra is not alone in his efforts to keep the rink going. "We have about 20 volunteers helping out now, by, at night time, cleaning up the ice, putting water back on the ice, spraying it." As difficult as it sounds to spray water on a rink in subzero temperatures, Feenstra says it used to be much worse. "Last year we talked to the town and they agreed to put a water supply system for us closer by. Before that we had to truck in the water. We had trucks coming in from Milton and other areas where we bought the water," said Feenstra. The abundance of water allows Feenstra to keep the ice thick, which he hopes will prolong the time that people will be able to enjoy it. "We have about four inches of ice now so we can skate until the middle of the summer," laughed Feenstra. "No, end of March we hope." Ben Lee, 7, may not understand how much work goes into keeping the ice rink running, but he shows his appreciation in his own way by skating like mad from one end of the rink to the other with seemingly limitless energy and a smile from ear to ear. "It's pretty slippery when you wear your skates," said Lee, who did his fair share of falling and getting up before the afternoon's extreme cold caused his mother to call him home for hot chocolate. Lee's mother Pei also appreciates the rink because of its convenient location. "He usually skates at the recreation centre at the public library but this one's within walking distance," she said. First time rink user Jamie Murdoch, 13, used the afternoon to fire countless pucks at the empty hockey nets, donated by the community. "I think it's pretty good. It's nice that they have nets out. They don't have those at other rinks," he said.
