22 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 17, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Canada abounds with out-of-the-ordinary wedding settings Dear Sam: I'm getting married in two years, so I read your article on weddings with great interest. However, I do want Aunt Betty to come, and I'd like my own minister, who says he will come if the wedding is in Canada. Can you help me? I'd like something really different, but my husband is heavily into trains and wonders about a train station. Are there some great wedding places that aren't outside? I'd hate to have the day of my dreams ruined by rain or bad weather. We're having a small wedding, and then will honeymoon in California and we're looking at the San Francisco area, because it sounds so romantic. Engaged Dear Engaged: Congratulations! There are lots of different places to get married in Canada. My daughter felt the same way fabulous CN station hasn't been renovated, it has been restored, and is a designated heritage site. The old ticket counters are the bar. There are three historically exquisite ballrooms that can accommodate 25-700 people. The other plus is that the food is excellent, I've eaten there a number of times. Right outside is a pretty square with a fountain, perfect for the wedding pictures, www.liunastation.com How about Niagara Falls? This has been a honeymoon heaven since 1804, and has more recently become a top destination for weddings. If you're adventurous you can say "I do" while you fly over the falls in one of the Niagara Helicopters, or try the hot air balloon method at Flight of Angels. If that is too off the wall for you, imagine saying your vows 23 stories above the falls in the area's four-diamond Marriott Niagara Falls Fallsview Hotel and Spa, 1-888-501-8916. The chapel overlooking the falls presents elegant and intimate surroundings and of course a breathtaking view of Niagara Falls. Niagara Falls is just simply gorgeous at night, illuminated by coloured spotlights, and you can even do evening vows punctuated by a spectacular fireworks display over Horseshoe Falls from May to September. If you want to be really cool, head to Quebec. The Quebec Ice Hotel takes 500 tons of ice, 15,000 tons of snow and five weeks to construct each year. Inside you will discover 34 rooms and Theme Suites, a magnificent ice chapel, beautiful exhibit rooms and art galleries, the ABSOLUT Bar, the N'Ice Club, and so much more. You can get married in the ice chapel, and even sleep there if you like, any time from January to April, www.wedding@icehotelcanada.com San Francisco, is one of the most romantic cities in North America. There are hundreds of hotels around San Francisco Bay, but only one on it. I spent a night there, and wanted to stay weeks at the Inn Above Tide. The guest rooms are decorated in calm shades of driftwood and terracotta, with teak furnished decks, literally right on the water, beside the ferry dock in Sausalito. We spent hours and hours on the deck looking over at the skyline of the famous city, and at the ship traffic. You can take a ferry over and walk to lovely restaurants and shops, without having to rent a car. You're doing exactly the right thing in interviewing photographers. Keep trying. Sam Ion -- Sam Ion can be reached at sion10@cogeco.ca. you do and was married outside overlooking her beloved Lake of Bays at a cottage resort. We took over the entire property for a week, had 250 people including 75 international guests, which included 50 Australians. Our backup for bad weather was the dining room of the lodge. And yes we had a minister. If your beloved loves trains, you might want to think about Liuna Station in Hamilton.
