SPORTSBRIEFS Two sessions will be held, one at 9 a.m. and the other at 1 p.m. Professional scouts will evaluate players on running speed, arm strength, pitching and fielding. Based on the skills assessment, some players will be chosen to play in a mini-game. The showcase also gives college coaches a chance to see young players to help with their recruiting efforts. The camp will be one of 30 across the United States and Canada. From those events, players will be chosen to attend the National Baseball Showcase August 15 in Birmingham, Alabama. Bantam Hornets win tourney in Pennsylvania The Oakville Venom bantam boys' AA basketball team has enjoyed a successful month, winning gold at a tournament in Kingston and then earning silver at a competition in Newmarket. The Oakville bantam Hornets blanked the Chicago Vikings 6-0 to win the under-14 division at the Sarah Backstrom Tournament in Erie, Pennsylvania. The Hornets won four straight games, allowing only two goals. They defeated the Perinton Blades 9-2, the Kent Fire 7-0 and Buffalo Hornets 9-0 to reach the final. Rachel Burton was Oakville's top scorer with five goals and four assists while Jennifer Myers and Victoria Larkin each had five goals and three assists. Other team members are Christine Smith, Sarah Coleman, Andy Nero, Danielle deBelle, Emily Aziz, Nikkola Wichenko, Erin Belleghem, Jennifer Kastelic, Darcie Preksta and Alex Reilly.
