16 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 31, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Stephen Lewis to speak at Oomama fundraiser May 10 In the next three years, the number of HIV/AIDS orphans in Africa is expected to rise to 18 million. For many, their entire future rests in the hands of their African grandmothers elderly women who scrape enough food and money together to ensure their grandchildren have enough to eat and the chance to go to school. Few know the plight of African grandmothers better than Stephen Lewis, chair of the Stephen Lewis Foundation and the former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS. On March 7 International Women's Day, the foundation launched its grandmothers to grandmothers campaign to raise awareness and mobilize support in Canada for Africa's grandmothers. Lewis will speak on the challenges of the HIV/AIDS pandemic on Thursday, May 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Road West, Oakville. He will highlight the impact grandmothers across Canada are having on African grandmothers and the orphans in their care. The evening is a fundraiser to support grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa who are looking after their orphaned grandchildren. It is being organized by the Oomama (grandmothers helping grandmothers) group in Oakville. Oomama is one of 145 grandmother groups across Canada from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island who are raising funds to support African grandmothers under the auspices of the Stephen Lewis Foundation. The foundation works to ease the pain of HIV/AIDS in Africa where people have been hardest hit by the pandemic. It provides resources to small, front-line groups that make tremendously effective use of comparatively small amounts of money. It is currently funding more than 150 projects in 14 countries in sub-Saharan Africa that support women, orphans, grandmothers and people living with HIV/AIDS. Last summer, the Stephen Lewis Foundation hosted the Grandmothers' Gathering, a meeting of nearly 300 grandmothers from sub-Saharan Africa and Canada, in advance of the XVI International AIDS conference in Toronto. The Gathering offered a forum for grandmothers from across southern Africa to speak as experts about their experiences and drive the agenda for support. It also gave Canadian grandmothers the opportunity to engage directly with African participants and let them know about their fundraising and awareness-raising work across the country. Oomama's Oakville fundraiser with Lewis on May 10 will feature African music with the seven-member Soul Influence group, the sale of Lewis' book, Race Against Time, booths with African artifacts and the chance at a draw for a fantastic prize. Tickets are available for a suggested donation of $50. All proceeds from the evening will go directly to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Charitable receipts will be provided. For tickets, call Kathy 905849-7075 or Donna 1-905945-8915.
