40 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 4, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Quigley rink finalist at lefty world tourney Cynthia Quigley's Oakville Curling Club rink reached the final but home-ice advantage didn't pay off as its comeback attempt in the ladies' final of last weekend's Lefthanders World Curling Championships fell short. Joy Wright, of the Ayr Curling Club, built a commanding 5-0 lead through three ends before Quigley's rink, which included Lisa Coulman, Cathy MacIntosh and Lynn Downey, rallied in front of the hometown crowd. Quigley scored one in the fourth and stole three in the fifth to cut the lead to one. Wright carried a 6-5 lead into the final end but without the advantage of last rock, Quigley was unable to even the score. Lessia Parks' Oakville rink won the ladies' consolation final over Elizabeth Woolnough of Mississauga. Other members of the consolation champion rink were Janet Lucas, Tina Ruhl and Cheryl Van Der Kroon. In the men's final, Barrie's Ken Leach defeated Howard Stanfield of High Park 5-2. In the consolation final, Oakville's Ken Sawchenko defeated Andy Staszak's York Curling Club rink. Other members of Sawchenko's rink were Doug Pole, Greg Ramier and Bernard Poirier. Other event winners were Joanne Trout, Dixie Curling Club (women's second event); Brenda Harrow, Idylwylde Gold and Curling Club (women's third event); Guy Racette, Jonathan Duguay, Don McAlister and Liam Hughes, Oakville (men's second event); Bob Dods, Pointe Clarie (men's third event); Tim Brown, Richmond (men's fourth event); Bill Bennett, Bradford (men's fifth event); James Eby, Paris (men's sixth event). Fifty-six teams, including rinks from Scotland and the U.S., took part in the event. Peewee B Hornets win Final Four title Isabelle Dinadis scored a pair of goals as the Oakville peewee B Hornets defeated Clearview 2-1 to win the title at the Final Four girls' hockey championships last weekend in Vaughn. The Hornets also posted a onegoal victory in the semifinal, blanking Leaside 1-0. Alex Abrahams earned the shutout and Hanna Moore scored the lone goal of the game. Colleen O'Kelly earned the netminding win in the gold-medal contest. Also contributing to the championship were Nicole Collaton, Courtney Sevier, Stephanie Solty, Alannah Magarelli, Krista Madill, Megan Watkins, Kendyl Wilson, Jordan Currie, Alex Thorn, Ashlynn Brown, Teagan Rolf von den Baumen, Jacqueline Hanson and Lisa Guidoni. Jeff Rolf von den Baumen, Jud Currie and Steve Wilson coach the squad. Kathy Moore and Karen Stefanishyn are the trainers and Peter Thorn is the club's manager.
