50 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 13, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Masters complete one-hour Swim for Heart U12 Vipers earn silver at hoops provincials The Oakville Masters Swim Club recently completed a one-hour swim in a fundraising effort for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. "In addition to being a good test of endurance for our swimmers, the Swim for Heart gave us an opportunity to raise funds for a really good cause," said club coach Mette Novais, who organized the swim along with Masters swimmer Laura Agro-DeRosa. Swimmer Sonia Rodrigues dedicated her swim to Melissa Rezende, who recently suffered a stroke. "Heart disease hits every family and it is good to know that the money raised will go towards hundreds of research teams to help support their work to develop leading-edge treatments and world-class prevention strategies," Rodrigues said. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and councillors Marc Grant and Roger Lapsworth attended the event. "Our members really appreciated the mayor and the councillors taking time to come to the event" said Randy Swyme, a 30-year Masters veteran who swam more than three kilometres during the hour. Will Mckinty swam approximately four kilometres. The Oakville Masters Swim Club provides year-round fitness and competitive swim training for adults of all ages. The club welcomes all levels of swimmers, from former competitive swimmers looking for a high-intensity workout, tri-athletes who need to improve swimming ability or recreational swimmers who can swim only a few laps of a pool. The club's popular once-a-week summer program is scheduled to begin June 25. For more information, contact Mette Novais by e-mail at Mette@cogeco.ca. West Conference voting either. London's Sam Gagner, expected to be a top-10 pick in this year's NHL draft, was named the smartest player and best playmaker. "He's had a huge impact," Mason said of his rookie teammate. "He's had a big influence on our production. He works so hard on his game in practice and he always has a positive outlook. He's a big reason why we ended up where we did." Of course, Mason also played a major role in London finishing first overall in the OHL standings. He set a league record with 45 wins and finished third in the voting for the conference's most improved player. "He's a late developer but he's getting in his groove," Legein said. "He steals games and gets the job done when he needs to." Perhaps working against Mason in the most improved category was that many of the league's coaches already knew how good he was before this season. "I think a lot of it is just getting the opportunity to play," said Mason, who had a 3.20 average and .914 save percentage. "Last year I only played 13 or 14 games. This year getting to play 62 let me show what I can do." -- Herb Garbutt
