Bolton has been acting since he left his Oakville home and moved to Toronto at age 17. His credits include a starring role in My Secret Identity and as a series regular on Street Time and The State Within. An avid cyclist, Bolton's summer plans on top of writing season three of Rent-A-Goalie, which is under development with Showcase include biking in a non-stop two-man relay race from California to New Jersey to raise money for Sick Kids Hospital. It's an endeavour the father of three-year-old Joe also plans to turn into a documentary. "Biking is my passion," he said, "but hockey is what I do when I want to have a lot of fun." That's easy to see when you're on the set of Rent-A-Goalie, where ball hockey games break out between scenes. The Rent-A-Goalie idea came to life after Bolton brought it to Chris Szarka, now executive producer, who shot and financed a TV presentation demo. That led to a development deal at Showcase and the filming of eight episodes for the first season in 2006. As the show's other executive producer Nicholas Gray put it, "Rent-A- "I play a straight man to a group of phenomenally talented comedians, so the best part of my job is also the hardest part of my job -- trying not to laugh." Christopher Bolton, Rent-a-Goalie creator Goalie is Christopher (Bolton's) baby. It was all his idea." Many of the ideas for the episodes, Bolton says, come from the cast and crew's own hockey experiences in men's leagues, which he and two other writers bring to life. One episode planned for next season is based on the bonehead play of the game, which Szarka's team made up. "On Szark's team, anybody who makes the bonehead play of the game has to carry around a broken chair for a week," said Bolton. "So we get a lot of ideas from that kind of thing. Other ideas, like squirrel fights, just come out of my head." The second last episode of season two was centered around Hudecki's Hootenanny Three-on-Three Ball Hockey Extravaganza. "The Hootenanny is sort of a nod to a tournament that a buddy puts on in Toronto every year," said Bolton. Hudecki, an old enemy of Cake's, arrives in town and plans a party, hiring Lance `The Boil' a rent-a-goalie as the deejay. "Only Cake knows that this guy Hudecki is a bit of a shyster, and tends to not follow through on these party ideas," said Gray. "Cake knows this is going to be a disaster, so he vows to save the Hootenanny and give Lance his big deejay gig." One scene features Hudecki dancing around, kissing and licking Cake's face to thank him for bringing a bunch of girls to the hootenanny. As soon as director TW Peacocke who was wearing a hockey jersey yells `cut,' laughter breaks out from the cast and crew. "The hardest part about working on this show is trying not to laugh," said writer Graeme Manson, while watching the scene backstage. "It's tough," Bolton said, smiling, after shooting the scene several times. "I play straight man to a group of phenomenally talented comedians, so the best part of my job is also the hardest part of my job trying not to laugh." Mostly, he says it's those crazy goalies he's laughing at. "Goalies are to hockey what drummers are to music. They're given a wide berth, and forgiven for a lot of their quirks. It takes a unique person to want to be a goalie." nual An 15th Lady Chelsea Welcomes Back Wednesday, June 6, 2007 At Le Dome Banquet Hall 1173 North Service Rd E, Oakville, ON Cocktails/Dine Around Dinner 6:30-8:30 p.m. Host Bar Silent Auction/Raffle Show 9:15 p.m. Tickets $150 per person/Tables of 10 All proceeds to the Oakville & District Humane Society Building Fund For tickets contact Trudy Barber 905-617-1400 Tracy Powell 416-917-5315 Hall 5, 6900 Airport Rd. at Derry Rd.
