On average Palm was also able to telephone his family once every week, but because these calls were usually made from a phone bank, a set of phones used by everyone on the base, his family could not call him. This was the source of great frustration for Carla. Christmas presented another difficult time for the Palm family as the time of cheer and merriment proved less joyful with Palm missing. However, Carla and the children made the best of it. "I took the kids to Virginia where my family is for the Christmas holidays," she said. "The kids were distracted with Santa and visiting cousins, so it was a good distraction for us but it was definitely a different Christmas." In perhaps the greatest Christmas present of all Palm was able to phone home wishing them all Merry Christmas on a day that proved very difficult for him as well. After Christmas, Palm says the time went by very quickly owing to the non-stop pace of work. "You quickly lose track of what day of the week it is because there is no weekday or weekend. You just keep doing the same thing so, you'll often forget that it's Saturday or that it's a holiday because the nature of the mission there is basically 24/7," he said. Other highlights of his deployment included visiting one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces in Tikrit during dealings with members of the new Iraqi government now headquartered there. Palm described the palace as "We all have a responsibility to give back. People do that in different ways. Some do it through volunteering or church work. For me, the way I feel I contribute is through being a professional military officer. " Lieutenant Colonel Eric Palm huge and ideal for accommodating large numbers of people, but as far as decorations are concerned they are now mere shadows of their former selves. "Most are in some state of disrepair or they might have been looted but the structures themselves are still in good shape," he said. Working with members of the new Iraqi army was another part of his time in Iraq that Palm remembers fondly. "A number of the units there have advanced to the point where they're essentially self sufficient at this point," he said. "There's a number of professional officers and non-commissioned officers in the Iraqi Army that have a lot of experience and really believe in this new vision for Iraq." Palm says these people, who are targeted by the insurgents as collaborators, are the most determined to see normality returned to their country. "They're very much like us. Almost universally they have families and they have the same sorts of concerns that we would have here in terms of education and providing a safe environment for their kids," he said. "For someone like me, I dedicate six months to that while for people like them this is a life or death struggle. They have committed their entire life to improving the area around them." In mid-April Palm's tour of duty in Iraq came to an end and after being met by Carla and his children at the airport the entire family headed for Puerto Rico for a much needed weeklong vacation. With the war in Iraq raging into its fifth year more and more Americans and Canadians are turning against it, adding to their voices to the chorus of discontent over what has become the most controversial American war since Vietnam. For Palm political concerns are outside his job description. "I have a obligation to serve and I do that. It doesn't matter what I or you think about the war," he said. "The military is an instrument of the civilian government, so the civilian leadership makes the decisions about how they're going to use the army and as long as it's not unethical or immoral I don't have the opportunity to question how that's done." Palm says he puts his life on the line in payment for the wonderful life he has been given and which so many others, in Iraq and elsewhere, will not have the chance to enjoy. "I feel very fortunate living here. We enjoy a standard of living and a quality of life that is probably in many respects unparalleled in history," he said. "We also all have a responsibility to give back. People do that in different ways. Some do it through volunteering or church work. For me the way I feel I contribute is through being a professional military officer." WHERE STYLE MEETS COMFORT...
