www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 19, 2007 - 25 Lifesavers at the ready in case of disaster A major fire, flood or chemical spill has just happened in your community and you are ordered to evacuate. You have to leave your home quickly and don't have time to pack food, clothes and personal belongings. You don't know when you'll be able to go home again if ever. This is a situation faced by thousands of Canadians each year, and to mark Emergency Preparedness Week 2007 last week, the Canadian Red Cross Oakville Unit took its message to Oakville Place with an information booth. The Red Cross encourages people to prepare in order to minimize their distress in the event of a disaster. "It's important that individuals are not caught off guard when disaster strikes," said Jack Lodge, Disaster Management Chair, Canadian Red Cross Oakville Branch. "The best way to do this is to know the risks in your area, develop an emergency plan for your family and make or purchase a disaster preparedness kit," said Lodge. The Canadian Red Cross is joining Emergency Management Ontario and Public Safety Canada in encouraging people to be self-suffiThe Red Cross offers the following checklist for preparing a home disaster kit: · Flashlight and batteries · One change of clothing and shoes · Radio and batteries (or a windup radio) · Blankets or sleeping bags · Toilet paper and personal supplies · Extra car keys and cash · First aid kit · A whistle to attract attention · Canned food and bottled water, manual can opener · Important papers such as ID, personal documents · Replace food and batteries once each year · Medication. Emergency Preparedness Week is a national awareness campaign coordinated by Public Safety Canada with provincial and territorial emergency management organizations. Canadian Red Cross staff and volunteers respond to thousands of disasters each year ranging from house fires to floods and tornadoes. To learn more about Red Cross services, how to volunteer, or to make a donation, contact your local branch or go to www.redcross.ca. DEREK WOOLLAM / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER PREPARED: The Canadian Red Cross Oakville Branch set up shop at Oakville Place last week to promote Emergency Preparedness Week and to offer members of the public tips on being prepared in case of disaster. "When a major emergency occurs, help will not reach everyone immediately," said Lodge. "If prepared to help themselves, Canadians will minimize the impact of the situation on their family and their community," Lodge said. Some Food for Thought The Magical Carnival Company came to town recently and stayed on an extra week due to cooler temperatures. It was worth the visit. Approximately $1,974 was donated to Halton Food For Thought to support Oakville school nutrition programs as a result of the carnival's visit to the the Oakville Entertainment Centrum. "We are committed to kids and community," said Linda Delarge from Magical Carnival Co. "Children arriving at school hungry lack energy, are lethargic and have difficulty concentrating, which certainly impacts their academic and social abilities. Halton Food For Thought helps build healthy communities by ensuring all students have equal access to healthy food choices," said Delarge. PenEquity Management, which owns the Oakville Entertainment Centrum, donated the space for the carnival, thereby allowing Magical Carnival to donate 15 per cent of ride proceeds to Halton Food For Thought.
