22 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 23, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Experience the 2007 Ford Edge continued from page 19 rear cargo area. The front passenger seat also folds flat for the storage of up to 8-foot long packages. The Ford Edge comes tricked out with a long list of goodies. Standard items include front and side airbags along with a Safety Canopy, dual A/C, 6-disc CD audio, tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio and cruise buttons, power windows, power mirrors and power door locks, fog lamps, alloy wheels, dual chrome exhaust tips and a slew of other features too numerous to mention. There are two trim levels, SE and SEL, and, as mentioned earlier, the Edge also comes in either FWD or AWD. Some sample prices are listed below but, as a rule, allwheel drive bumps the price by about $2,000 and the SEL model adds $3,000 to the MSRP. Options include a reverse sensing system, DVD navigation, DVD entertainment and the innovative panoramic Vista Roof, a large glass moon roof complimented by a fixed rear glass panel. Under the hood, the Edge harnesses a brand new V6 engine. I imagine that Ford execs were getting a little testy with the constant criticism over the off-the-shelf 3.0-litre Duratecs they were seemingly stuffing into everything over the past few years. But they can now boast about the bigger and all-new 2007 SPECTRA *Based on an MSRP of $15,995/$21,695 on 2007 Spectra LX MT (ST5417)/2007 Sportage LX MT (SP5517). **Leasing plans OAC provided by Kia Canada Financial Services. KIA is a trademark of Kia Motors Corporation. 3.5-litre V6 that makes an impressive 265 hp @ 6250 rpm with a peak torque of 250 lb-ft. This is a strong and lusty engine but it needs to be, pulling a rather porky 1853 kg (4085 lbs) of curb weight and returning fuel economy ratings of 13.5L/9.1L/100km (city/hwy) for the AWD model. My numbers were pretty close to that, but a lot of city driving can push you up into the neighbourhood of 15L/100km. Power is translated smoothly via a 6speed automatic and AdvanceTrac with RSC (Roll Stability Control comes standard. Handling is as agile as can be expected considering the Edge's rather substantial weight and size. And although the brake pedal feels a little spongy, the 4-wheel disc ABS binders stop the vehicle well enough. I spent some driving time in both the Ford Edge and its upscale Lincoln MKX sibling. They are both comfortable and poised performers with heightened levels of styling, quality and performance and overlooking some of my nit-picking, they both bode well for the future of Ford. And it's also nice to know that both the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX come courtesy of Ford's Oakville Assembly Complex in Ontario, Canada where 4,000 or our friends and neighbours, along with a $1 billion conversion to flexible manufacturing, will hopefully be building multiple future models on these new platforms. And with a plug-in version already making the show circuit, I wouldn't be surprised to see a hybrid version within a few years. Can a vehicle that starts at over $30,000 make the kind of sales impact and volume that Ford needs to push their Way Forward plans? So far, sales have been climbing in the U.S. and Canada since vehicle launch, and customers seem to be voting yes for an allinclusive crossover that is meeting their equipment wish lists, their driving demands and their expectations. And, as someone once said, a successful product does more than just satisfy your expectations. It satisfies expectations you didnít even know you had.
