www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 1, 2007 - 15 Halton hosts obesity forum June 6 Half of Halton adults are either overweight or obese (37 per cent are overweight and 13 per cent are obese), according to the Rapid Risk Factor Surveillance System (Ontario). Halton Region will host Healthy Weights: Halton Takes Action on June 6, to learn about the extent of obesity in Halton and best/promising practices to address this issue. Participants will be asked to identify local priorities for action and to commit to participate in a solution for Halton. The forum takes place from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Country Heritage Park, 8560 Tremaine Rd. in Milton. Speakers will take the stage in the morning while group discussion will fill the afternoon. Speakers will include: Dr. Mark Tremblay, Chair of Active Healthy Kids Canada as keynote guest; Dr. Shelley Lothian, Senior Research Advisor for the division of Children's Services at Halton Region; Oakville resident Gil Penalosa, Executive Director of Walk & Bike for Life; and Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr and Halton's Medical Officer of Health will deliver opening remarks. Invitees include representation from various sectors including elected officials, community organizations and businesses, school boards, workplaces, health professionals, urban/rural planners, parents and caregivers and the food industry.
