4- The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 1, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Witnesses described victim as abusive towards brother Continued from page 1 jury has already seen from the Oakville apartment are video and photos of a blood-stained hacksaw in the kitchen sink. Footage from July 3, 2005 shows George minutes after buying the hacksaw purchasing Tums and kitty litter at No Frills in Oakville. The jury saw kitty litter in photos and video of the apartment in the bathtub along with a knife, saw and stained clothing. There was also kitty litter in the kitchen sink, where an ear, pieces of scalp and dark curly hair were found. George, who stands about 6-foot and has dark hair, leaned forward and looked to his left at a large TV screen showing the video yesterday. This was the last evidence entered by Crown attorney Andrew Goodman. O'Marra told the jury in his opening statement that the defence's case would show Helen was "predisposed to violence and aggression." The court has already heard Helen was charged in 2001 with assaulting her mother, Stavroula, though no charges were laid. O'Marra opened his case yesterday with three witnesses, including a woman who lived with Helen for a short time in 2001 at the Florence Booth Women's Shelter in Toronto. "She said that she got arrested because of a fight with her mother," Luana Murphy testified yesterday. "She just said she hated her mother. `I hate my mother, I hate my mother.' Like that, a lot." Murphy, who said she'd been in and out of rehab for an addiction to crack cocaine and is currently in a 21-day program, told the court about a fight that broke out between Helen and another woman. She testified Helen was waiting for the shower and telling another woman to hurry up because she had somewhere to go her sister's wedding but the woman didn't get out of the shower. "(Helen) grabbed the woman by the hair, pulled her out and started railing on this woman that was in the shower," Murphy told the jury. "She was hitting her...She just started going at her and the other girl was trying to cover up." Murphy said Helen stood about 5feet two-inches and weighed 110 pounds while the woman in the shower was about five-feet six-inches "really muscular" and weighed 150 pounds. The fight eventually broke up when shelter staff got between the women, Murphy told the jury. The court also heard from two former neighbours at the Etobicoke condominium where George and Helen lived before moving to Oakville. Neither of the neighbours to take the stand had ever been inside the They're the yacht of boat shoes. Arsoniadis' apartment, but described what it was like to live nearby. "Quite often I would hear Helen yelling at George and swearing at George, and you kept hearing the raised voice for about an hour, sometimes half an hour, it would go on," said Mary Chananot. "The voice from Helen was very loud, and when she yelled at George she just yelled repetitiously and said the same thing over and over again." Chananot said she heard yelling like this about once a week, and sometimes through the weekend. "Jesus Christ George, what's the matter with your **** head," she said, providing the jury with an example. "I told you to do this, I told you to do the **** dishes." "Only once I heard George say, `Helen, I've done it, what's your problem?'" Maisie O'Hara, another former neighbour, told the court a similar story. "All I ever heard was Helen. She was the one that was screaming and shouting," she said. "All these bad words you don't want to hear, the f-word and everything else." O'Hara went so far to call the yelling "threatening." "When someone is yelling and screaming, `I hate you, I hate you,' I take that as threatening," she said. Both neighbours confirmed they had never been inside the Arsoniadis apartment, never saw Helen with a weapon or heard anyone in the apartment "cry out for help," in response to crossexamination by Goodman. George Arsoniadis is expected to take the stand when the trial resumes Monday before Justice John Sproat. Come Dancing!! NEW! BALLROOM BOOTCAMP FOR TEENS!
