www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 20, 2007 - 11 Want to hear about Sustainable Halton? Halton Region's staff is making itself available to give presentations on the Sustainable Halton planning process to any interested community groups or businesses. The Sustainable Halton initiative will help Halton determine how it will grow to the year 2031 and beyond. The plan will examine issues such as how much land Halton needs, air quality, transportation, agriculture, social and community services, physical activity, the needs of an aging population and other critical issues related to Halton's future. Sustainable Halton will also identify the important parts of Halton's natural heritage system. "The Province has said that we need to plan for up to 780,000 people and 390,000 jobs by the year 2031, so we need to hear from the community on what they want to protect and preserve as we plan for that growth," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "We know that not everyone can make it out to a public meeting. By offering information and feedback tools on our website and through our phone lines, as well as going out to community groups, we're making sure that people know about Sustainable Halton and have the information they need to tell us what they want Halton to look like in the future." Organizations that would like to have Halton make a presentation to their group can either email sustainable@halton.ca or phone 905-8256000, ext. 7455. Information is also available at www.halton.ca/sustainablehalton, including 22 background papers that provide a framework for discussing Halton's future. They include issues such as analyzing Halton's land supply, examining healthy communities principles, determining how to meet Halton's human services needs for the future and how Halton can meet its future infrastructure needs, such as roads and water and wastewater services.
