www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 6, 2007 - 9 Town hopes measures will slow traffic on Eighth Line By Kim Arnott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER To commuters, the stretch of Eighth Line between Dundas Street and Upper Middle Road looks like a shortcut. To locals, it looks like a good way to avoid traveling on the often-congested Trafalgar Road. And to drivers with a lead foot, it looks like an ideal place to ramp up the speed. But to Don McMartin, and 129 other homeowners along Eighth Line, the stretch of road is home. "When all these commuters come down our street, they don't look at it as a residential street, and it is a residential street, that's my point," McMartin told Town Councillors on Tuesday night. Unlike other minor arterial roads in north ® Oakville, that stretch of Eighth Line is straight and has homes fronting along the roadway. For the past year, residents have been complaining to the Town about the speed and volume of traffic using their street. "It is a straight run from one end to the other, with nothing to slow speeders down," said McMartin. "We watch cars go literally flying by." In an attempt to slow down traffic and dan- gerous passing, the Town is going to eliminate the street's centre turning lane. On-street parking and a bicycle lane will narrow the traffic lanes, in a further attempt to convince drivers to ease up on the gas. McMartin told councillors that residents currently have difficulty getting out of their driveways safely, and don't let children play on the sidewalks in front of their houses because of the speeding cars.
