Baby boom going on in Halton By Melanie Hennessey SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER * FREE SERVICE To Fallsview Casino *After $10 Casino Rebate T.I.C.O.#50007535 168 CLARENCE ST., PORT COLBORNE, ON, L3K 3G5 1-800-838-1789 When it comes to growth in the number of young children a community has, Halton is No. 1 in Ontario. According to new Census figures released last week, the region has experienced a 17-per-cent jump in its population of children -- newborn to six years -- over the past five years, equating to 5,700plus more youngsters. This is higher than any other census division (geographic areas used by Statistics Canada) in the province and third highest across Canada, said Shelley Lothian, Halton senior research advisor. "This is a big news story, especially when you compare us to the rest of Canada," she said. "There is a significant baby boom going on here." Across the province, the growth rate for those aged newborn to six is actually down three per cent. Lothian said the numbers are also in the negative in many areas across the country, with only eight per cent of the 287 census divisions seeing increases. At the local level, Milton led the pack, both provincially and nationally, amongst municipalities with populations greater than 10,000. The town has seen a whopping 163 per cent increase in its number of newborn to six-year-olds, going from 2,280 in 2001 to 6,005 in 2006. Lothian said the next closest ranking municipality is Okotoks, Alta. with a 62 per cent increase. Okotoks trailed in second place behind Milton as well earlier this year when overall Census community growth rates were first published. Caledonia, Hagersville area, call branch office 905-765-3837.
