www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 3, 2007 - 11 Decision where to put portables at Sunningdale a complex issue Continued from page 6 their supporting reasons. · More than 90 per cent of parents who responded identified the location selected by the board. And a number of those parents were angered that the Dreamacres preferred choice was even being considered. · The picture of the Bobcat in the July 21 Oakville Beaver that Ms. Brooks said was "plowing down and demolishing the site of Dreamacres" was, in actual fact, doing no such thing. What the Bobcat was doing was fulfilling a promise and an agreement made by Dreamacres leaders (Grade 1 teacher) Maggie Linton and project landscaper Marius de Bruyn to myself, our principal and senior members of the school board's Facility Services team in a closeddoor meeting last February -- it was dismantling and removing a haphazardly-placed collection of unmaintained logs in various stages of decay and rot that the children injured themselves on through serious slips, trips and falls. · Most every naturalized structure on the Sunningdale School grounds is off limits to the students on their breaks and was unaffected by the arrival of portables. · Halton Regional Police Services "Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design" (CPTED) certified officer, Drew Scott, (with particular expertise in safe schools) advised the location preferred by Dreamacres represented a substantial danger in terms of student safety and the safety of the police force's tactical team in the event of an intruder crisis and lockdown. Officer Bruce Hasenbacher, a seven-year member of the HRPS' Tactical Team and currently Sunningdale's D.A.R.E. officer, accompanied officer Scott around the Sunningdale grounds and arrived at the same conclusion, which was that the temporary displacement of two small, annual gardens (vegetable and sunflower) paled in comparison to the risks presented to all affected parties should Dreamacres' preferred location be implemented. Ironically, Dreamacres' claim that everything it does is in the best interest of the children was blatantly absent when it fought long and hard to have the portables placed against neighbours' residential fences that would have been blind to every window in the school (no visual communication), adjacent to a narrow and unsupervised, shaded laneway and would have been a prime partying location for local teenagers. Ask your school custodian what they pick up each morning in the shadowed, hidden areas of our elementary schoolyards. Ms. Brooks feels the school board should be ashamed of itself for reasons that it "deemed this land necessary for portables." With the verifiable facts available as to how and where the portables came to be at Sunningdale, it is Ms. Brooks who should be ashamed of herself for writing a broad-based, mudsling of a letter.
