18 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 15, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Flower show at Hopedale Mall Aug. 25 The Oakville Horticultural Society is presenting its annual Flower Show Saturday, Aug. 25 at Hopedale Mall. Everyone is invited to view the results of the season's best at the annual show at the mall located at 1515 Rebecca St. (at Third Line). This year there will be three categories of competition -- Horticulture, Floral Decorative and Junior Gardens -- each with local gardeners presenting their garden projects. In the Floral Decorative category, exhibitors will compete in five classes, all themed on A Day at Hopedale Mall. Designs range in size from miniature arrangements that fit into a fiveinch by four-inch display, to designs that can range up to three feet high. In the Horticulture class, there are more than 100 categories for entries, ranging from roses, sunflowers, hibiscus, hosta, hydrangea, gladiolus, to houseplants and fruits and vegetables. Junior Gardeners will be displaying their achievements from a variety of garden efforts. The show is open for public viewing from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Prize winners will receive their trophies from Mayor Rob Burton at an awards ceremony in Centre Court at 4 p.m. Humanist group outgrows name The Oakville Humanist Community is expanding -- only one year after being founded. Just over a year ago, six people came together in the dining room of Elka Ruth Enola's Oakville home. They founded the Oakville Humanist Community. However at their last meeting in June, they found they had outgrown both their meeting place and name. The group has renamed itself the Halton-Peel Humanist Community (HPHC), appropriate since one of the founding members, as well as the current vice president, are both from Peel. The Halton-Peel Humanist Community also decided to move its meeting place to the Oakville Town Hall since it was becoming difficult to accommodate everyone comfortably in a private home. The Halton-Peel Humanist Community meets on the third Tuesday of each month for discussions followed by a business meeting. The discussions are open to non-members and the topics vary. Discussions and conversations all have a secular point of view. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at the Oakville Town Hall located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd. The topic for discussion will be public funding of faith-based schools. Group members will also discuss the Humanist of Canada (HAC) Annual General Meeting, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Ramada Inn & Suites in Milton. Interested members of the public are encouraged to attend HaltonPeel Humanist Community meetings. For more information contact Enola at ere@sympatico.ca.
