www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday August 29, 2007 - 53 New exhibit coming to Gairloch Gardens British artist Neeta Madahar will have her debut Canadian solo exhibition at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens. Sustenance, a series of large photographs, will be on display from Sept. 8 to Nov. 4. Curated by Marnie Fleming, Sustenance examines the complexities of human domesticity through the images of birds gathering and feeding. For more than a year, Madahar recorded the activity of birds from the balcony of her apartment. "It is around the concept of `home' and the intangible qualities associated with dwelling that many of my ideas converge," said Madahar, "familiarity and strangeness, belonging and migration, prolonged routine and repetition." Her show looks at these aspects of life "within the domestic environment," she said. "Here, various species of birds come to feed at the apartment balcony of my former home in Farmingham, Massachusetts, and become the subject of exploration, with their activities documented using a large-format camera." Madahar has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work is included in several private and public collections, including the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, California, and the Victor and Albert Museum in London. She is a visiting photography lecturer at the University College for the Create Arts in Franham, England. Sustenance also includes Birdnester, an early sculpture by Canadian artist Liz Magor from the Oakville Galleries' permanent collection. The 1977 work is a wagon filled with the nests of numerous blackbirds. The exhibit's opening reception will be held Friday, Sept. 14 from 8:30 10 p.m. at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens, 1306 Lakeshore Rd. E. The artist will be in attendance.
