www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday August 31, 2007 - 31 Local talent leading way for Team Canada juniors Oakville players have taken centre stage as Canada has jumped out to a 2-0 series lead in the junior hockey Super Series against Russia. Former Holy Trinity student Stefan Legein scored for the second game in a row and was Canada's player of the game in a 3-0 victory over the Russians Wednesday. Oakville's John Tavares set up Kyle Turris for the game's first goal and Legein extended the lead in the final minute of the second period. If a rivalry was lacking when the series started, one is quickly developing. "You knew things were going to heat up," Legein said. "Emotions are running high, but you have to try to not get involved too much and just play your game." The series is commemorating the 35th anniversary of the Canada-Russia Summit Series, which led to one of Canada's greatest hockey moments - Paul Henderson's winning goal in the last minute of the final game. In Monday's opener, former Oakville Rangers goalie Steve Mason surrendered a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes but shut the Russians down the rest of the way. The London Knights netminder made 17 of his 40 saves in the final period after Canada had rallied to take a 4-2 lead. Russia outshot the Canadian squad 42-23. It was Legein that sparked the Canadian comeback. Down 2-0, the Columbus Blue Jackets' draft pick scored Canada's first goal. Forty-one seconds later, Turris scored on a penalty shot to tie the game at two. Oakville native Sam Gagner set up Brad Marchand with what would prove to be the winning goal in the opening minute of the second, then netted one of his own late in the period to add some insurance. "We got off to a slow start, but we wanted to stick to the game plan, and I think it ended up working pretty well," said Gagner. The first four games of the eight-game series between each country's best under-20 players are in Russia with the final four in Canada. The final two games in Russia were to be played today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday). Local teacher helps runner to Pan Am gold Abbey Park High School phys-ed head Greg Dailey helped Ottawa's Jason Dunkerley to gold at the Para Pan American Games earlier this month in Brazil. In the men's 1,500-metre race for the visually impaired, Dunkerley and Dailey, his guide, clocked 4:08:00 flat for the victory, .07 seconds off the time that Dunkerley recorded the previous day to break both the Canadian and Pan American records. Dunkerley's gold completed a comeback from a broken leg and skull fracture suffered in 2005, when he was hit by a car while training with teammate Stuart McGregor. "Jason showed last year he'd be able to get back to where he was before and this year he confirmed it," said Dailey. "He had his best year of training of his career. He had it in him to get that world record (4:05.11) for sure. We were perfect for the first 1,200 metres. It just shows there is a fine line between going a touch too fast or a touch too slow when you're trying to break a record."
