26 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday September 12, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Sounds of Hope benefit concert Sept. 29 Sounds of Hope, a local concert to raise funds to ease the pain of AIDS in Africa, is taking place Saturday, Sept. 29 at St. John's United Church. Proceeds from the concert go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. A recent edition of the Stephen Lewis Foundation newsletter, Grassroots, begins like this: "Africa has become a continent of orphans. Thirteen million children have lost their parents to HIV/AIDS in sub Saharan Africa." These orphans are typically being looked after either by the oldest sibling or by a grandmother. It is these problems associated with the continuing growth of the HIV/AIDS pandemic that the Stephen Lewis Foundation is responding to by supporting viable, locally initiated and operated local projects. The local fundraising concert on Sept. 29 starts at 7:30 p.m. Performers include Circle of Harmony, a local, prize-winning women's close harmony ensemble; Brian Hayman's outstanding Getting in the Groove Jazz Group; and some vocals by local songster Mervyn Russell. Tickets cost $20 and are available at St. John's United, Bookers, Notes, Leslie's Music Supply, Ten Thousand Villages and L'Atelier Gregorian. For more information, visit www.stephenlewisfondation.org or contact Mervyn Russell at 905845-3250 or mervicia@yahoo.ca. Symphony hosts Build an Orchestra Sunday END OF SUMMER TENT SALE SATURDAY September 15th, 2007 9:00am 3:00pm The Oakville Symphony is presenting a concert called `Build an Orchestra' at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 16 at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, 130 Navy St. The Oakville Symphony, in co-operation with story-teller Mark Laister, will present an entertaining and informative concert that will show how orchestras developed and expanded from small groups of instruments to larger ensembles of the same instruments. Then, with the addition of different types of instruments, they became the equivalent of the Symphony orchestras of today, capable of portraying many moods and colours. The concert will last approximately 45 minutes, and there will be audience participation, as randomly-selected kids will have a chance to join the musicians on stage. Tickets cost $5 for children, $10 for seniors and $12 for adults. Tickets can be purchased from the box office of the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. The concert is sponsored by Ruth Anne Winter, a broker at Royal LePage.
