The Town's Community Services committee has unanimously recommended that heavy trucks be prohibited from travelling along either Eighth Line or Sixth Line between Dundas Street and Upper Middle Road. While the recommendation still requires final approval from council on Monday night, it appears likely to pass, despite a $20,000 report from town staff recommending against such a prohibition. In March 2006, more than 100 residents living along the residential street signed a petition asking the town to undertake a variety of measures to slow down traffic and eliminate trucks from the arterial road. Residents have argued that the stretch of roadway is used as a shortcut and a way to avoid congestion along Trafalgar Road. They've also expressed concern for children playing in front yards only feet from the roadway where large and heavily-loaded trucks roar by. However, a traffic study undertaken by a traffic consulting firm described the levels of through truck traffic as "low," and suggested a truck prohibition was "not justified." The study determined that trucks make up less than two per cent of the daily traffic along the roadway. It also found that fewer than 20 trucks a day are using the street to travel through the neighbourhood. The remaining trucks, the study found, had either an origin, or a destination that would justify them travelling on Eighth Line between Dundas and Upper Middle. Local trucks, which are servicing nearby plazas, construction sites or other businesses, will be exempt from the proposed ban. That led town staff to suggest that enforcement efforts would hardly be feasible to nab the small number of trucks that aren't legitimately on the roadway. However, Ward 6 councillor Tom Adams, who has championed the truck ban, suggested that it will give the town a tool to deal with certain local companies whose vehicles are regularly using the roadway as a shortcut. "It's the small number of heavy trucks that are the real problem," he said. He added that cut-thru construction traffic will likely only get worse as development gets underway north of Dundas Street. Adams agreed it was unfortunate that the town spent $20,000 on a report that politi- cians have ignored, but said his attempts to have the prohibition approved last summer, under the previous Town Council, were unsuccessful. "We could've come to the same conclusion last year," he said, noting that he has consistently heard concerns about the issue from residents in the area. Part of the problem, residents have complained, is the unusual nature of the road. Unlike other minor arterial roads in north Oakville, that stretch of Eighth Line is straight, and has more than 100 homes fronting along the roadway. While Sixth Line residents have not made the same complaints, Ward 5 Councillor Marc Grant noted that a truck prohibition on Eighth Line could divert vehicles down Sixth Line instead.
