The event runs from 4-9:30 p.m. and begins at the Oakville museum located at 8 Navy St. The walking tour will explore Oakville Harbour, which was a port of entry to Canada in the 1830s and a place of refuge for many freedom seekers fleeing slavery in the United States. Wednesday's event celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade and is funded in part by the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. From 4-5 p.m., join the walking tour to explore the stories and lives of the new immigrants and the people who helped them to safety. The tour ends at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts at 130 Navy St. where, from 5-6 p.m., guests will be treated to an array of Caribbean and African hors d'oeuvres, tropical punches, and a drumming performance. From 6-8:30 p.m., sit in on a symposium with guest speakers and books available for signing by authors. Speakers include internationallyacclaimed author and long-time Halton resident Lawrence Hill; historian/archeologist, Karolyn Smardz Frost; historian/dramatist, Gwen Robinson; and author and historical consultant Rosemary Sadler. The Source Protection Committee will be responsible for developing three pieces of documentation that will complete the source protection planning process: 1) a Terms of Reference, 2) an Assessment Report and 3) a Source Protection Plan.
