14 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday September 28, 2007 The wool bin www.oakvillebeaver.com Halton serves up cake to celebrate dump's 15th birthday Oakville residents are invited to attend a community open house celebrating the Halton Waste Management Site's 15th birthday on Saturday. The open house is between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a cake cutting with Regional Chair Gary Carr at 12 p.m. Activities for visitors to the birthday party include: · A guided bus tour of the Halton Waste Management Site; · View a new section of the landfill under construction and how we protect soil and groundwater; · Watch the landfill machinery in action and up close; · Take part in a craft made from reusable items; · Enter a contest to name Halton's new Blue Box mascot; · Enjoy a cash barbecue provided by the Lion's Club of Milton; · Learn how the Halton Region Solid Waste Management Strategy helps protect our environment and extend the life of the landfill. "The Halton Waste Management Site is recognized as a state of the art facility that allows Halton Region to manage our residential waste," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "I would encourage everyone to attend this event, it's an opportunity to see the landfill in operation and also act as a reminder to all of us to practice the 3R's reduce, reuse and recycle in our daily routine." To help make the event waste free, visitors are asked to email hwms15@halton.ca with how many people in their family are planning to attend. This will help organizers to prepare the right amount of food and materials for the activities and minimize the amount of waste. The Halton Waste Management Site originally opened in 1992 with a life expectancy of 20 years, or the year 2012. Since Halton residents have been leaders in environmental stewardship including recycling, the life of the landfill life was extended to 2023. With the Region-wide implementation of the GreenCart in spring 2008, the life of the landfill life will be extended a further six to eight years.
