The 15-year-old learned about the political process in his Grade 10 civics class. "I learned that young people haven't been voting," he said, "and that we can make a real difference by voting." As Grade 10 student Sana Ahmed put it, "You can't really complain about your country or "The students tend to vote on the left end of the spectrum." Civics teachers Steve Crocco and Terri Edmondson set a goal of getting 60 per cent of students to the polling stations Tuesday, but were far shy. It wasn't for lack of effort. "A lot of the students have been going class-to-class to rally other students to vote," said Crocco. "A lot of teachers are getting involved and bringing their classes down," added Edmondson. As for the school's results, the teachers weren't surprised to see the Green and Liberal parties earning most of the vote. "My class seemed to be more Liberal," said Edmondson. "They thought in the debate that the Liberals did best. A lot of them really like the Green party, too." Added Crocco, "The students tend to vote on the left end of the spectrum." The teachers educated students on the process by showing a taped local debate in their civics classes. "We also had someone come in to talk about the referendum, so all of the students know what's happening there," said Edmondson. On that question, White Oaks like the rest of the schools across the province voted no. But it was a lot closer at White Oaks, with just 22 votes separating yes from no. Antony Discenza, 14, voted yes to the referendum question. "I think the MMP system "They're promising to raise minimum wage. "I voted, but I know one vote's not exactly going to make all the difference," he said. Discenza cast his ballot for NDP candidate Tony Crawford. "They had a rough go of it the last time, but I think they're a party that could have a decent shot," he said. Plus, there's a major issue the NDP is fighting for that hits home with Discenza.
