Notre Dame denies OT Red Devils trip to OFSSA The result was the same but the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils should at least feel they made the Notre Dame Fighting Irish earn their way to the provincial field hockey championships. Three days after dropping a 2-0 decision to the Irish in the Halton final, Oakville Trafalgar again lost 2-0 in Thursday afternoon's Golden Horseshoe championship. OT had earned a second chance at the Irish after beating Hamilton's St. Jean de Brebeuf 2-1 on Tuesday. Chelsea Hawksworth broke a 1-1 tie in the second half. Teammate Charlotte Horton had opened the scoring. The Devils had used that second chance to their advantage last year to earn their place in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournament, where they won a bronze medal, but weren't so fortunate this time around. Notre Dame put OT on its heels early by scoring two minutes into the Halton final. This time the teams look more evenly matched. Still, it was the Irish that struck first 22 minutes into the game and then added another five minutes later. Oakville Trafalgar didn't fold, though. They came out strong in the second half and peppered Notre Dame goalie Katy Jo Williams with shots, but she refused to yield anything. Notre Dame had yet to surrender a goal this season but OT nearly ended that streak in the final minutes as they continued to apply the pressure that had been absent in the Halton final. "Notre Dame's a good team and they have an excellent goalie," said OT coach Jim Groen. Notre Dame, which has won four OFSAA championships in the last six years, will again be one of the favourites when the high school championships begin next Thursday in Mississauga. And it's quite possible they may have already met their toughest competition. "I think today's game could have been the OFSAA gold medal game," said Candice Hawksworth. "Unfortunately, both of us can't go."
