At its meeting Wednesday, Regional Council passed a motion to consider the expense as part of its 2008 operating budget discussions. The item came about at the request of Burlington Counselling and Family Services, which urged the Region last week to invest some of its GTA pooling savings in the counselling services for local citizens living in poverty. If $300,000 is allocated, it could help serve about 1,000 families. The provincial government is in the process of phasing out pooling -- the system that Halton and other local regions contributed to in order to help Toronto pay for its social service costs. This means Halton will have extra money in its coffers. The Region's 2008 budget will include a strategy to deal with the savings.
