www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday November 9, 2007 - 29 National Philanthropy Day is November 15 Last year in Oakville, The Women's Centre received hundreds of calls from women in need, Food for Life delivered over $700,000 worth of food to local charities and the Oakville Parent Child Centre provided 475 parents with educational support and information. Carried out by 31 United Way of Oakville (UWO) funded agencies, these services were made possible by the philanthropy of the people of Oakville. National Philanthropy Day is a special day set aside to recognize and pay tribute to the great contributions that philanthropy and the people active in our philanthropic community have made to our lives, our communities and our world. Whether by volunteering, gifts in kind or donation of funds, philanthropy is critical to the well being of Oakville. Essentially, philanthropic acts bring resources to the community time, money, knowledge. UWO brings people and resources together to strengthen our community. For example, UWO provides a means for donors to invest their dollars with others to increase the impact of that donation. UWO offers The Regional Municipality of Halton training and consulting services to strengthen the volunteer workforce. With these resources in place United Way of Oakville works through volunteer committees to ensure that funds and resources are allocated to their best use and maximum impact. Essentially the strength of our community is directly tied to the philanthropy of its citizens. Henry David Thoreau said, "Philanthropy is almost the only virtue which is sufficiently appreciated by mankind." On National Philanthropy Day and every day, United Way of Oakville thanks those citizens of Oakville who work to make our town a better place. -- Submitted by the United Way of Oakville. t be for you! migh Are you between the ages of 15 and 30?
