"We want to provide a safe, welcoming place where children can have fun learning even after the school day has ended," says Program Director Michelle Knoll. The program also provides an encouraging environment where English-as-aSecond-Language (ESL) children can practice and improve their English. The Oakville Literacy Council has created a new and improved outreach kit to be distributed to local businesses and employment agencies to heighten awareness of the Council's programs. People without basic literacy skills can find themselves isolated. "We want to help our students gain confidence and dignity. We want them to become better employees, citizens, and parents," says Oakville Literacy Council Program Manager Joanne Smith- Scozzafava. Low literacy is often passed on to succeeding generations, but with the help of the CFO, these two organizations are hoping to close the book on that legacy. By working with donors, the CFO is able to provide grants to registered charitable organizations for projects that maintain or improve quality of life in our town. The CFO supports a range of charitable activities: social services, health care, arts and culture, environment, heritage, education and community development. Because of this unique mandate, it can provide seed funding for new projects that might otherwise fall between the cracks.
